Two-way speakers are designed to provide a good frequency response and are commonly used for the distribution of quality music (usually in the foreground, as is the case in some stores or bars).

Wide bandwidth, with bass frequencies below 100 Hz and treble frequencies up to 20,000 Hz, with a flat response in this range.

A wide range of power ratings to adapt to any situation, from small speakers with power ratings under 15 W to large speakers with over 300 W.

Although they are used with a 100 V line transformer to install multiple units in parallel, there are transformerless models (especially those with high power) or with a low-impedance input available.

The aesthetics of this type of speaker are important due to the type of room in which they will be installed. The variety of speaker designs and colors is extensive. There are also several mounting options: wall, floor, or ceiling, surface-mounted, or recessed.

Sometimes, low-frequency reinforcement is needed, which is achieved with dedicated speakers (subwoofers), which reinforce the frequency response below 100 Hz.

More sophisticated applications require perfect control of the speaker's frequency response and directionality. There are models with directional speakers and parameters that can be externally controlled using audio processors (usually DSPs).

They are used in hotel lobbies with high ceilings, meeting rooms, auditoriums, aerobic rooms, gyms, large shopping centers, pubs and music bars, fashion stores, trade shows, and more.

Distribution recommendations

In general, the two-way speakers are distributed in the rooms to be sound-equipped on the side walls:

  • In narrow areas with high ceilings (e.g., shopping mall hallways), space every 5 to 10 m.
  • In large areas with high volumes (e.g., hotel lobby), a speaker box covers between 100 and 200 m2.
  • In large areas with medium-low ceilings (e.g., music bars), space every 5 m.

 

Example

Equip the outdoor areas of a 40 x 40 m (1,600 m2) shopping center with sound.

 

SOLUTION

  • One speaker for every 200 m2; 1600/200 = 8 speakers in groups of 4, on two poles, 9-10 m high.
  • To cover the shaded areas, another group of 4 speakers, 3-4 m high, on each pole.
  • The 8 speakers above are very high-power (200 W), the ones below are low-power (30 W), with independent amplification.
 

Example

  • Two front speakers facing the auditorium.
  • Two side reinforcement speakers, at the end of each 30 m side.
  • Installed at a height of 5 to 6 m.
  • High-power models (100 W).
