This is the fundamental application of public address systems. Its main requirement is to ensure the intelligibility of the broadcast announcement. To achieve this, aspects such as the following must be taken into account:

  • The energy of message is concentrated in the frequency band between 350 Hz and 5 kHz. The system's frequency response must be flat and consistent in this range.
  • Intelligibility is most sensitive in the frequency range between 1 kHz and 5 kHz. The PA system must evenly cover the listening areas in this range, with sufficient speaker distribution to ensure the sound pressure level in this frequency range.
  • To compensate for voice differences from one person to another, both the microphone desk and the amplifier must be properly adjusted and sized. If distortion is introduced in the amplifier or speakers, intelligibility is reduced by masking the main consonants (those that carry the information).
